四国リモートワークの日常｜自然・文化・人に囲まれた外国人の暮らし｜Remote Work Life in Shikoku – A Foreigner’s Experience Surrounded by Nature, Culture, and Community

現在、私たちは日本全国のビジネスパーソンが英語学習の目標を達成できるようサポートしています。

今回は、四国・愛媛県に住むリモートワーカーとしての経験をシェアできることを嬉しく思います。

私はアメリカ・ルイジアナ州ニューオーリンズ出身で、2020年から愛媛に住んでいます。日本には、ずっと日本文化に魅了されていて、実際に見てみたいと思ったのがきっかけで来ました。

2018年に英語教師として働き始め、愛媛県西条市に配属されました。美しい自然や食べ物、文化、人々、そして平和な雰囲気にすぐに魅了され、この地域に恋をしました。

その後アメリカに帰国しましたが、毎日のように愛媛での生活を思い出していました。そして2020年に愛媛に戻ることを決意し、以来ずっとここでの生活を楽しんでいます。

Hello, My name is Andrew Smith, the English Education Business Manager at Globarx English. Currently, we are helping business professionals all across Japan reach their English learning goals. I’m excited to share my experience as a remote worker living on the island of Shikoku in Ehime prefecture. I am an American from New Orleans, Louisiana and I have been living in Ehime since 2020. I came to Japan because I’ve always been fascinated by the culture and I wanted to see what it was like first hand. In 2018, I landed a teaching job which put me in Saijo-City, Ehime prefecture. I instantly fell in love with the area because of the beautiful nature, food, culture, people, and peace that you can have here. After I returned to the United States, everyday I thought about the life I had in Ehime. So, in 2020, I decided to return to Ehime and I have been loving my life here ever since returning.

自然

愛媛とその周辺地域の自然は、これまでの人生で見た中でもっとも美しいものの一つだと思います。私の趣味は写真撮影とサイクリングで、この町に住んでいるおかげで、どちらも素晴らしい体験として楽しめています。

ここで暮らしながら自然の中で過ごせることは、とても特別で貴重なことだと感じています。週末には川やオアシスまでサイクリングに出かけて、泳いだり、のんびりしたりするのが大好きです。山に登ったり、神社を参拝したり、鳥や動物の声に耳を傾けたりするのも楽しみのひとつです。

次の目標は、世界的に有名なサイクリングルートであり、「世界で最も美しい橋の一つ」とも言われているしまなみ海道を走ることです。

Nature

The nature in Ehime and the surrounding areas is the most beautiful that I’ve seen in my life. Two of my biggest hobbies are photography and cycling and living in this area allows me to have great experiences doing both. The opportunity to spend time in nature while living here is extremely unique. On weekends, I love to go cycling to a river or oasis to swim and relax. Other times, I will take a trip up mountains, visit shrines, and listen to the birds and animals. My next step is to cycle on the Shimanamikaido bridge, a world famous cycling route which is one of the most beautiful in the world.

伝統

歴史や文化に興味があるなら、愛媛にはきっと夢中になれるものがたくさんあると思います。新居浜市には「太鼓祭り」という伝統行事があります。これは一種の収穫祭で、チームが「太鼓台」と呼ばれる大きく美しい建造物を担いで、街中でパフォーマンスを行います。

私は外国人ですが、去年、太鼓チームに参加する機会に恵まれ、人生で最もエキサイティングな体験の一つになりました。地元の人たちはとても親切で、来年もまた参加するように誘ってくれました。来年がとても楽しみです。地元の人々の温かいおもてなしは本当に素晴らしいです。愛媛には、本当に親切な人がたくさんいます。四国には、四国八十八ヶ所巡礼（四国遍路）があり、豊かな自然や多くの史跡を巡ることができます。

Traditions

If you love history and culture, Ehime is filled with it. The city of Niihama holds a tradition called “Taiko Matsuri” , a type of harvest festival in which teams carry large and beautiful structures called “Taikodai” through the city for performances. Although I am a foreigner, last year, I had the honor of joining a Taiko team, and it was one of the most exciting experiences of my life. The local people here are so friendly that they invited me to participate again next year and I can’t wait for it. The hospitality of the local community can not be underestimated, Ehime is filled with truly kind people. The island of Shikoku is also home to the 88 temple pilgrimage (Shikoku Henro), a route which allows you to experience an abundance of Shikoku’s nature as well as many historic sites.

旅行

四国は日本の他の地域から少し離れているように感じるかもしれませんが、日本の有名な地域への旅行を計画するのはとても簡単です。愛媛に住んでいる間に、京都、東京、大阪、長崎、広島など、日本の多くの人気都市を訪れました。愛媛の静かな環境を楽しみながら、必要に応じて大都市へ出かけることもできます。

愛媛に住むもう一つの大きなメリットは、生活費が大都市に比べてはるかに安いことです。そのため、日本各地を旅するためのお金を貯めやすくなります。

Travel

Although the island of Shikoku may seem isolated from the rest of Japan, it is easy to schedule a trip to the more famous areas of Japan. While living in Ehime, I have visited Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka, Nagasaki, Hiroshima, and many more popular cities in Japan. I can enjoy the peace of Ehime and travel to the bigger cities if I ever feel the need to. Another great bonus of living in Ehime is that the cost of living is much cheaper than living in the larger cities, so it becomes easier to save money that I can use to travel all across Japan.

リモートワーク

在宅勤務によって得られる柔軟性は本当に素晴らしいです。以前の仕事では、仕事が終わるころにはいつも疲れ切ってしまい、自分の時間を楽しむエネルギーがまったく残っておらず、ワークライフバランスは最悪でした。この疲れの主な原因は、仕事や会議のために移動に多くのエネルギーを使わなければならなかったことです。

Globarxで在宅勤務をするようになってからは、仕事の後でも趣味を楽しむだけのエネルギーがあります。想像以上に生活の質が向上しました。さらに、同僚たちからも素晴らしいサポートを受けています。住んでいる場所はバラバラですが、チームワークやサポートの面では、これまでの仕事人生の中でも最高の環境だと思います。

アメリカでもリモートワークは非常に人気です。しかし、アメリカでは距離や交通渋滞、生活費の高さなどの理由で、リモートワーク中に休憩時間を最大限に活用するのが難しいこともあります。愛媛では、休憩時間に2〜3分歩いたり自転車に乗ったりして、近くのお店やレストランに行き、美味しい料理を楽しむことができます。家に戻って休憩し、リフレッシュするのも簡単です。

Work from home

The flexibility that I have because I can work from home is amazing. At my previous jobs I often felt exhausted at the end of the work day, and because of that, I didn’t have any energy to enjoy my own time, my work life balance was awful. A major reason for this exhaustion was because of all the extra energy I had to use to travel to and from work/meetings. Now that I am working from home with Globarx, I have enough energy to enjoy my hobbies after work. It has really improved my quality of life more than I could have imagined. I also receive outstanding support from my coworkers. Although we may live in different cities, our teamwork and support is the best I have experienced in my professional life.

In the United States, remote work is also very popular. However, in the US it can be difficult to make the most out of your breaks while working remotely, because of things like distance, traffic, and a high cost of living. Here in Ehime, it is extremely easy for me to walk or bike 2-3 minutes to a store or restaurant during my break for some great food, return home to rest, and become refreshed all within my break time.

ワークライフバランス

グローバークスでの私の仕事は、自分のスキルをフルに活かせること、そして常に好きなことを仕事にしているので、ワークライフバランスを保つのに本当に役立っています。ビジネス、写真、メディアなど、本当に情熱を注げる分野でスキルを伸ばすことができています。毎日、健全なローテーションで新しいことに挑戦できるので、仕事への没頭感を高めることができます。

ワークライフバランスが悪い人は、何年も同じ仕事を毎日繰り返していることが多く、仕事に飽きたり、興味を失ったりすることがあります。グローバークスでリモートワークをすることで、毎日が新鮮で刺激的で楽しいものになります。

Work life balance

I love that my position at Globarx allows me to use my full skillset in my work, and this really helps my work life balance as I am always doing something I enjoy. I am able to grow my skills in business, photography, media, and more areas that I am truly passionate about. Everyday I have a healthy rotation of tasks that allow me to take on a new challenge, this helps me feel more engaged with my work. Many people with a poor work life balance also are stuck doing the same task every day for years, and this can make you feel bored or uninterested in your work. Working remotely with Globarx allows everyday to feel fresh, exciting, and fun.

Moving forward

We are currently growing the brand of Globarx English, a program that focuses on business English learning. This is extremely exciting as this is a way that I can help the community here in Japan. Learning English doesn’t have to be difficult, we have developed an atmosphere that makes learning English fun and engaging. I am so excited to see the growth I will have regarding my future life in Japan.
